Proper care of your fishing equipment is essential to success and enjoyable experiences on the water. Fishing line often needs to be replaced or added to reels, especially at the beginning of a season. Anglers who fish frequently or experience frequent changes in climate should periodically check for weakened lines.

Tie New Line to Old Line

Step 1

Pull 2 feet of line from your reel.

Step 2

Remove 2 feet of line from the spool of new line.

Step 3

Overlap the lines by about 1 foot.

Step 4

About 6 inches from the end, make a 1-inch loop of the line already in your reel.

Step 5

Take the tail of the line within the reel and overlap new line through the loop four to eight times.

Step 6

Pull the knot tight.

Step 7

Attach the reel and spool of line to the spooling station.

Step 8

Tension the line lightly by using your fingertips and pulling the line away from your reel.

Step 9

Gently turn the reel and add as much new line as necessary to fill the barrel.

Tips and Warnings

  • Change your line before the season starts, as line can degrade without use. If you've been fishing frequently, you may need to add line, especially if your prey has abrasive teeth. In place of the spooling station, you can use a partner holding the spool with a small dowel for smooth spinning.

Things You'll Need

  • Spool of new line
  • Spooling station or fixed point
