Camping at Fairmont Hot Springs in Canada offers the chance to get out in nature among steaming waters and towering mountains. The Kutenai Indians used these springs for their healing and medicinal powers. Today, many campers come to visit these pools for a relaxing soak, the scenery and endless activities throughout the year.
The Springs
On the northern side of Columbia Lake in the Columbia River Valley lay the Fairmont Hot Springs. Tucked away in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, these clear, sulpher-free pools stretch out almost 1,000 square meters. Camping among the Fairmont Hot Springs not only allows you the opportunity to rejuvenate in the pools, but to explore the surrounding Rockies.
Campgrounds
There are a number of campgrounds in the area, offering accommodations for anything from tents to RVs. Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park is a preferred spot for those who wish to do some angling while camping. This park has four different sites from which campers can choose. Kootenay National Park is a large 350,000-acre park just north of Fairmont Hot Springs and is home to mountains that are over 11,000 feet tall. Kootenay offers three campgrounds throughout the park.
Climate
June through August are the warmest months in the area, with average highs between 70 and 80 F, and lows between 40 and 50 F. The coldest months are between November and February with average lows in the teens and highs in the 30s. Decide what activities you are most interested in when planning your trip. You also want to ensure that you have the proper camping for the trip, based on the weather.
Summer Activities
While camping in the summer, you can take advantage of numerous activities around the Fairmont Hot Springs area. If you would like to hike, try exploring the Spirit Trail that leads to Canal Flats. If you would rather be out in the water, try windsurfing on Windermere or Columbia Lakes. There are plenty of strong winds during the summer, making this activity fun and challenging. Anglers will enjoy Whiteswan and Alces Lakes, which house an abundance of rainbow trout.
Winter Activities
Fairmont Hot Springs is open to camp during the winter, when you'll find plenty of activities to keep you engaged. Enjoy skiing or snowboarding at Fairmont Ski Hills or Panorama Ski Resort. Both of these ski runs have trails cleared for cross-country skiing, as well.
