Polar heart rate monitors are fitness accessories that consist of two components: a transmitter and a watch unit. The transmitter is designed to be worn on the user's body; electrodes attached to the rear of the device detect the wearer's heart beat. This information is then sent wirelessly to the watch unit for display. In order for the Polar heart rate monitor to work, the user must take some care when applying the transmitter; once this is accomplished, the watch will detect the transmitter automatically.
Step 1
Insert one end of the elastic strap into one of the buckles affixed to the ends of the transmitter. Wrap the strap around your torso and insert the remaining end into the unused buckle. Position the transmitter on the front of your torso, just below your chest muscles.
Step 2
Moisten a clean washcloth. Pull the transmitter away from your chest and locate the electrode grooves built into the rear of the device. Use the damp washcloth to apply a small amount of water to the grooves, then return the transmitter to its original position.
Step 3
Strap on the wrist unit and press any button to activate the device. Examine the watch display and confirm that there is an icon of a heart visible; this indicates that the watch has detected the transmitter. If you do not see an icon, move to an area free of electrical interference and try again.
Step 4
Press the upper-right button on the watch to cycle through the lap time, time, calories burned and timer modes. Press the lower-right button to cycle through the beats-per-minute and maximum-heart-rate percentage display modes. Navigate to the “time” mode and press the red button to enter standby mode. Wait for the watch to detect your heart rate, then press the red button again to begin recording your workout data.
Step 5
Begin your workout. Pause recording at any time, if desired, by pressing the red button; press the button again to resume. After you have finished your workout, press the lower-left button twice to stop recording. Review the summary information displayed on the screen.
Step 6
Remove the watch unit and disconnect the elastic strap from the transmitter. Use a clean towel to wipe away any excess moisture from the watch and transmitter. Store both devices in a cool, dry location.
Tips and Warnings
- To input settings into the watch unit, such as the current date and time, navigate to the desired mode and press the red button twice; use the two buttons on the right side of the watch to input settings, then press the red button to save your data.
