The notion that you must burn more calories than you take in is a well-established weight-loss fact. What is less well-known is that there are certain foods that amplify body fat loss when incorporated into your diet. When combined with exercise, a diet rich with monounsaturated fats, omega 3s and plenty of water will rev up your fat-burning engine.

Water

Water is one of the most crucial components to losing weight. It flushes sodium and other toxins out of your body to prevent water retention and bloating. Water can suppress your appetite, curbing food cravings and the desire to drink high-calorie, high-sugar beverages such as sodas and fruit juices. Aim for at least 10 glasses of water per day to combat body fat.

Monounsaturated Fats

According to a 2007 study by the American Diabetes Association, a diet rich in monounsaturated fats can help decrease fat accumulation; particularly around the midsection. Foods that contain these fats include avocados, peanut butter, olive oil, almonds, walnuts and sunflower seeds.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids help increase metabolism and burn fat. Fish--including mackerel, tuna, sardines, salmon and herring--are good sources of omega 3s. Pay attention to how you cook fish for optimum fat loss. Fish should be poached, steamed, grilled or baked for the most optimum fat-burning effect. Other sources of Omega 3s include walnuts, flax seeds, flax seed oil and tofu.

Egg Whites

Egg whites are a rich source of protein and can help you melt body fat. According to Nutrition Data, one egg white has approximately 11 grams of protein and only 17 calories, making this one of the most high-quality and low-calorie proteins. It can be added to meals and mixed in beverages such as smoothies.
