Windsurfing combines the techniques of surfing with the technology of sailing. The windsurf board features a large sail that allows the rider to harness the wind. As opposed to conventional surfing, the windsurf board does not require waves to gain momentum. The fins of the windsurf board allow the rider to sharply turn and maneuver the board across the surface of the water. Novice windsurfers should wear a life jacket as strong winds can easily separate the rider from the windsurf board.
Step 1
Carry your windsurfing board down to the shallow water located at the edge of the ocean. Insert your lead foot into the front strap located on the top of the windsurfing board. Lift the sail out of the water by the soft rubber handle while balancing yourself with your back foot.
Step 2
Lift your back foot off of the ocean floor as the sail of your board catches the wind. Insert your back foot into the corresponding foot strap as you begin to sail forward. Lean onto the inside or outside edge of your windsurfing board to steer yourself away from the shallow water.
Step 3
Rotate your sail from side to side to utilize the flow of the wind. Extend your arms and lean back to increase the speed of your windsurfing board. Pull the sail toward you and stand straight up to decrease the momentum of your board. Steer your windsurfing board toward a breaking wave.
Step 4
Bend your knees as the front end of your board reaches the peak of the wave. Straighten your legs as your board rides off the top of the wave. Lift your knees to enable your board to ascend off the surface of the water. Pull the handle of the sail toward you to ensure the underside of your windsurfing board stays parallel with the water.
Step 5
Bend your knees as your windsurfing board descends back onto the water. Push the handle of the sail away from you and lean back to regain your lost speed from the wave jump. Practice these fundamental turning and jumping techniques to perfect the basics of windsurfing.
