Numerous myths exist about how fast hair grows, how to make it grow faster and how to properly care for your mane. Know the facts before purchasing products that make false claims.
How Fast Hair Grows
Hair grows one-quarter inch to one-half inch per month. Despite hair-care products' claims that they can grow hair faster, hair growth is typically 6 inches a year, depending on your genetics.
Normal Loss
Hair follicles go through three phases during their life cycle: the anagen phase for about three years, then a transitional phase and finally the telogen phase for about three months, when hair rests and then sheds. The scalp sheds about 100 hairs per day.
Myths
Hair grows at the same rate all over the scalp. Brushing your hair 100 times each day will not make it grow faster.
Haircuts
If you are growing out your hair, have it trimmed every six to eight weeks. This should remove split and damaged ends and maintain the health of the hair. If you do not do this, you will need to cut off more hair eventually.
Amount of Hair
On average, each individual has around 100,000 strands of hair on her scalp, but that can range from 90,000 to 140,000. Genetics, stress, iron deficiency and alopecia can cause you to lose your hair.
Vitamins
Taking a multivitamin with B vitamins, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin D will help your hair become stronger and withstand breakage. All of these vitamins can assist with increasing scalp circulation and fight graying.
