Anniston, Alabama, part of Calhoun County, is located almost exactly in between Birmingham, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1883 by Samuel Noble, the city started primarily as an iron town for the Woodstock Iron Company. Noble's dream was to form the perfect town after which others would be modeled, earning the town its nickname "The Model City."
Museums
Anniston has two museums, both of which, as of September 2010, can be visited by a family of five for under $30. The Anniston Museum of Natural History has hands-on activities that allow you and your family to learn about a variety of animals native to Alabama. Admission is $6 for adults, $5.50 for those over 60, and $5 for children between four and 17. Children younger than three get in free. The Berman Museum of World History displays art and artifacts from a variety of cultures and time periods, including the American West, Asia and World Wars I and II. Admission runs $5 for adults, $4.50 for those over 60, and $4 for children between four and 17. Children younger than three may also enter this establishment for free.
Festivals
Anniston, Alabama has a variety of festivals throughout the year that offer family fun and the opportunity for education. In February, there is the Black Heritage Festival, which celebrates black history month. This free event offers attendees lunch, the opportunity to view African artifacts and a chance to listen to musical performances. In April, the Mountain Longleaf Festival celebrates Earth Day.
