Wyoming horseback riding vacations are an opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts and horse lovers to get a taste of cowboy life. Riding across the Wyoming range on a well-trained, gentle horse will enable each rider to get a glimpse of what it was like for pioneers crossing the country years ago. Whether you're camping on the range or staying at a ranch bunkhouse, your Wyoming riding vacation will create memories for a lifetime.

Preparing for the Trip

Visitors to ranches or riding camps in Wyoming need to be in shape in order to enjoy several days of riding on the trail. Some of the rides are more strenuous than others and will likely result in riders having a few sore muscles the next morning. However, these aches and pains will fade quickly if you're in good physical and mental shape. Some exercise routines that are recommended before going on a riding vacation include yoga to build core strength, brisk walking, and bicycling. These exercises will help you to build your core strength as well as improve your respiratory ability.

Horsemanship

Horsemanship training is the first thing you experience upon arriving at a Wyoming ranch for your riding vacation. Safety is a priority for ranch hands and should be for riders as well. Before hitting the trail each rider will be instructed in basic horsemanship including how to approach the horse, how to mount and dismount, and what types of actions to avoid around the horses. Visitors will also be instructed in the basic care of the horse they will be riding for the week as everyone on the ranch is responsible for caring for his own mount.

Guides

Each of the Wyoming riding vacation rides is guided. Many of the guides have grown up in the area that you will be riding and are familiar with the landscape and the weather of the area. This knowledge helps to ensure that you have a pleasant ride. Your guides will assess you individually and determine your skill level. Your guides next will decide on a ride suited to your skill level. The job of the guide is to assist each of the riders if necessary and make sure each rider gets to enjoy seeing the beauty of the Wyoming countryside.

Lodging

Various ranches that offer riding vacations in Wyoming have different lodging options available for their guests. Some ranches provide a guest bunkhouse similar to the type of bunkhouses ranch hands used to stay in several years ago. Other ranches take the lodging gear on the trail and so you can camp out in the field with the horses. These tents are packed up and placed in the supply wagon in the morning and pitched in a new location when the riding is over for the day. Your group meets the supply wagon nightly at the new camp location.

Mustangs

Wild mustangs live and thrive on the Wyoming ranges. It is common for riders to get a glimpse of a wild mustang herd while out riding. Mustangs have also been known to venture near the camp of riders. However, it is important to remember that these horses are wild and should not be approached. The guide will provide instruction on how to safely watch the mustangs.
