Corpus Christi, a small city on the Gulf Coast, serves as one of the premier beach destinations in Texas. With an ideal placement between two large barrier islands, the state-protected Corpus Christi Bay offers calm waters and the convenience of many area facilities and accommodations. Corpus Christi has a selection of four beach areas that have received recognition for their pristine maintenance and picturesque scenery.

Pristine Undeveloped Coastline

"Texas Parks and Wildlife" magazine chose Padre Island National Seashore as one of the 10 best beaches in Texas in 2008. Located just 34 miles from downtown Corpus Christi, Padre Island received special recognition for its unparalleled surf fishing. This area should also appeal to wilderness enthusiasts, as Padre Island presents the world’s longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island beach. With 70 miles of sand dunes and coastline, visitors have plenty of room to stake out their own beach territory and enjoy some uninterrupted solitude. Wildlife enthusiasts can keep an open eye for the area’s rare species, which include the Kemp's ridley sea turtle.

Family Friendly Fun

Corpus Christi’s North Beach received recognition from the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association as a winner of the 2012 Best Restored Beach Award. Located next to the Harbor Bridge off Causeway Boulevard, North Beach offers sandy shoreline in a convenient location. This family-friendly beach features calm waters, lifeguards and easy access to a variety of restaurants and shops. Corpus Christi maintains the northern tip of North Beach as a dog-friendly primitive area popular for long walks. North Beach also features extensive public facilities, including bathrooms, showers and picnic tables.

The Convenience of Downtown

McGee Beach in Corpus Christi also won the 2012 Best Restored Beach Award from the ASBPA. A downtown beach located on Shoreline Boulevard, McGee Beach rests within easy walking distance of many hotels. Its location within Corpus Christi Bay shields McGee Beach from seaweed, which makes it much more picturesque than the average urban beach. McGee Beach also features a convenient parking area, public restrooms and jetties for fishing. The wide sands of this beach are ideal for lounging, with chairs and umbrellas available for rental.

Beach Camper Paradise

Located less than 25 miles from downtown, Corpus Christi’s Mustang Island State Park was named one of “Texas Parks and Wildlife" magazine’s best Texas beaches in 2008. Of particular appeal to beach campers, Mustang Island features full facilities with restrooms, showers and drinking water. The park keeps five miles of unbroken beach open for biking and walks, with an additional mile and a half reserved for beach campers. This barrier island wilderness offers secluded sunbathing and swimming on its well-maintained beaches. Visitors interested in beach ecology and preservation can participate in free programs and tours available on request.
