Exercise Tips for College Students

When it comes to staying fit in college, the key is to find a happy medium, according to TeensHealth, an online health and parenting resource maintained by the Nemours Foundation. Shoot to get the recommended 60 minutes of exercise a week, and combine healthy workouts with a balanced diet and good sleep habits to receive the maximum health benefits.

Take the Long Way

When you're heading back to your dorm after class, walking over to the dining hall or meeting a friend at the library, take the long route, recommends Children's Hospital Boston. You'll squeeze in a little extra exercise and also have the opportunity to get more familiar with your school's campus. You can also sneak in exercise by climbing stairs instead of taking the elevator, parking at the far end of the lot when you have to drive to class or pacing while you're studying for a test. To make your exercise more comfortable, keep a bottle of water and comfortable shoes in your backpack.

Join the Club

Intramural sports teams are a practical way to get exercise and make new friends. Even non-athletes can enjoy easy-to-participate-in activities like ultimate Frisbee or soccer, and if you've always wanted to play flag football, tennis or basketball, intramural teams are an opportunity to try your skills. If you're new to a sport that interest you, check your course catalog to see if your school offers a beginners' class. You can get credit--and stay healthy at the same time.

Hit the Gym

If you're used to working out with exercise equipment, such as the treadmill or a weight bench, there's a good chance you'll find your favorite workout machine at your school's gym. College gyms, also known as health or fitness centers, typically offer classes in addition to equipment, so you can sign up to try yoga, belly dancing, Pilates, dance aerobics or other workouts that pique your interest. If your school fitness center isn't what you have in mind, check with local fitness centers--many offer discounted memberships for area college students.
