Planning is the key to successfully packing for skiing. Although including items you need for both on and off the slopes may result in a longer packing list, careful planning will result in spending less time and money shopping for the items you forgot, and more time having fun on the slopes, once you reach your destination.
Outerwear
Start with your head, hands and feet to make sure you do not forget essential clothing items. As Direct Ski, a web site dedicated to ski vacations notes, because you can lose 40 percent of your body heat through your head, a good-quality hat, such as a wool hat, is essential. Consider also packing a neck gaiter, scarf or bandanna for added protection. While gloves may offer increased freedom of movement, waterproof mittens allow better blood circulation and keep your hands warmer. When packing socks, one pair of warm wool socks is better than two pair of everyday socks. According to Direct Ski, wearing two pair of socks can lead to blistering.
A good quality, wind and waterproof ski jacket, long enough to cover and protect your kidney area is another essential. Direct Ski recommends choosing a jacket with plastic zippers and cuffs that prevent snow from getting up into your arm area if you fall. Waterproof snow pants or bibs you can unzip at the bottom will fit better over ski boots.
Under Layers
Stay Aspen/Snowmass, a Colorado vacation planner, advises that changes in weather as you go about your ski day require thinking in breathable layers when you pack under clothing items. Dressing in layers not only helps you stay warm by providing better insulation, but also allows you to remove clothing if you get too warm. Under layers can include long underwear, turtlenecks and fleece or a ski sweater. According to Direct Ski, under layers that touch your skin should be an absorbent fabric, such as cotton or polypropylene, to prevent your skin from becoming moist.
Ski Gear and Accessories
Unless you are renting ski gear, make sure to pack your skis, boots and poles. Head protection, in the form of a ski helmet, is an essential accessory. Additional accessories such as unbreakable sunglasses and goggles are important for eye protection. Stay Aspen/Snowmass recommends choosing glasses or goggles with a yellow lens to increase visibility on snowy days. Skin protection is equally important, so make sure you pack sunscreen and lip balm that contains a sunscreen.
Off the Slope
If you are packing for more than one day, pack underwear, socks and street clothes for the appropriate number of days, as well as pajamas and a robe. Some ski chalets have hot tubs, so you may want to bring along a swimsuit, cover-up and towel. Important items to leave off your packing list, however, are your valuables. According to KC Ski Club, you should leave your good jewelry and any other valuables behind.
Miscellaneous Items
If you already purchased your ski pass or ticket, make sure you put it in your purse or fanny pack. Also, make sure you include medical insurance cards or information, a list of important phone numbers and any medications you need in your bag.
