Constipation is defined as fewer than three bowel movements per week, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse. The NDDIC cautions that constipation is just a symptom of a larger digestive problem -- typically, poor diet. Nonetheless, Americans spend $725 million annually on over-the-counter laxative products. Fruit juice is widely obtainable and can even be prepared at home, making it a welcome self-care alternative for constipation.

Sorbitol

Fruit juices such as prune, peach and pear are all high in sorbitol, a naturally occurring sugar that can enable movement of the bowels, according to the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Virginia. In cases of constipation, the hospital recommends mixing equal parts prune juice and water, then pouring the mixture into a small cup for an infant or toddler serving. Older children and adults may need to ingest more of the beverage.

Intestinal Irritant

Fruit juices with significantly higher fructose than glucose levels can generate intestinal gas and trigger the intestines to expel rather than absorb the sugars, notes AskDrSears.com. The site notes that fruits such as sweet cherries, peaches and apples contain this ratio and so trigger intestinal discomfort. While these fruit juices should be avoided in cases of loose stools, they are a potential choice for individuals suffering from constipation.

Laxative Mix

Bulk-forming laxatives may be more palatable when mixed with fruit juice, notes the American Academy of Family Physicians. Bulk laxatives work by binding water and waste together in the intestines so the stools are larger, yet softer, and can pass more efficiently and easily. When taking bulk laxatives, individuals should increase their fluid intake to prevent dehydration, which may include drinking fruit juice.
