The Thyroid Diet is an eating plan detailed in a book of the same name written by Mary Shomon. The diet claims to help users control thyroid function through diet to enable them to lose weight. The foods and supplements listed in the book are intended to boost the metabolism to burn fat at a higher rate. Along with eating the right foods, you are advised to eat smaller meals and control portion sizes. Speak to your doctor before following the Thyroid Diet. There is no evidence to prove that anything you eat affects thyroid function, according to MayoClinic.com.

Carbohydrates

On the diet, eat a complex carbohydrate paired with another item as a way to control thyroid function and increase your metabolism. The carbohydrate selection you decide on should be made from whole grains. Some accepted foods include whole grain bread, whole great crackers, wheat pasta and brown rice. Fruits and vegetables are other sources of complex carbs.

Proteins

At each meal on the Thyroid Diet, include a protein option with the carbohydrate food that you eat. The protein choices that you consume should be from lean choices. Some selections to consider for your meals include egg whites, fish, skinless chicken, turkey breast, low fat cheese, tofu and beans. A sample meal you may have on the diet is salmon with brown rice.

Low Glycemic Index Foods

To control the amount of insulin in your body while following the Thyroid Diet, you are advised to not eat high glycemic index food items. If you do eat high glycemic index foods, you should never eat them alone, but instead pair them with a protein food item. Some examples of low glycemic index food items include carrots, eggplant, broccoli, cabbage, mushrooms, tomatoes, cherries, plums, grapefruit, beans, nuts, seeds and fat-free dairy products.
