Having children take part in your garden can act as a learning tool and can encourage healthy eating by allowing them to take part in creating the food they will eventually eat. Many garden tools, however, are too big for smaller hands to use. It's important to find tools that your child can use to make the gardening experience more enjoyable.
Gloves
Small gloves are one handy tool for children to have while helping in the garden. Gloves allow your child to dig in the dirt without exposing their sensitive skin tissue to slivers or bacteria that may be hiding in the soil. Children's gardening gloves come in several sizes and styles to fit both your child's hands and personality.
Hand Rake
A hand rake is another helpful tool for children in the garden because it is small enough for them to be able to handle when tilling the soil or raking up weeds or leaves.
Trowel
A garden trowel is a small shovel, making it the perfect size for little hands. A trowel is small enough for the child to use to dig up the soil for planting or move dirt from one place to another in the garden.
Short-Handled Tools
Along with hand rakes and trowels, many companies make garden tools--such as hoes, leaf rakes and shovels--that have short handles. These tools allow your child to do multiple tasks in the garden without struggling with a handle that is often taller than they are.
Wagon
A wagon can be a helpful tool for kids in the garden. It allows your child to load it with other tools or dirt and more easily carry the load across the garden.
Seeds
Seeds are an important part of any garden, but many seeds are so small that they can be hard to handle with smaller hands and fingers. Choose large seeds, such as sunflowers or pumpkin seeds, which little fingers can easily grasp and plant.
