Physical therapy involves manipulating and working with the body to help relieve pain, gain strength and increase range of motion. Patients who are recovering from such procedures and conditions as chronic pain, knee and hip replacements, broken bones, amputated limbs, brain injuries and back surgery are typical candidates for physical therapy rehab. In addition, student and professional athletes may seek physical therapy to rehabilitate from minor and major sports-related injuries, such as an ACL tear. You can start your search for a physical therapy facility in New Hampshire by searching for a facility or for a specific doctor who can then refer you to a rehab center.

The Internet

A search using Google, Yahoo or other search engines will provide you with links to physical therapy facilities. For example, Abilities Physical Therapy & Wellness Center has two locations in New Hampshire. In addition to standard physical therapy rehab, the facility also offers massage and fitness and wellness classes. Check out services such as MDNationwide to research a specific doctor's training, awards, education, any malpractice history, license status and board-certification status. MDNationwide does charge a fee for this information.

Insurance

Contact your insurance company. Therapy facilities that are "in network" will be less expensive for you. Your insurance company will provide you with a list of facilities and doctors who are included in your network.

State Medical Board

Contact the New Hampshire Board of Medicine (see Resource 4). This website has an option where you can search for doctors who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Once you find a reputable doctor, he or she can direct you to an appropriate facility to start your rehab. Your doctor should have an appropriate licensee and be board-certified.

First-Hand Experience

Ask about the success rates and treatment plans from other patients who have undergone physical therapy as a particular facility. Talk to other patients about their experiences with a particular doctor and staff at the rehab center. Choose a therapist who makes you feel comfortable. Take a tour of the facility and determine if you would feel comfortable spending time there. Ask as many questions as you can think of.

Other Options

If you are open to the idea of alternative medicine during your physical therapy rehabilitation, consider facilities that offer such treatments as massage, acupuncture, electric nerve stimulation and other holistic approaches.
