Losing weight is not an effortless task. With countless weight loss programs and trendy diets available, it may be difficult to find the right plan. Nutrisystem and Jenny Craig are two popular diet and weight loss systems on the market. Though they have the same goals---to help you lose weight---each one has its own characteristics.

Nutrisystem

Nutrisystem is a program in which prepackaged and preportioned foods are delivered directly to you. The company also offers snacks for between-meal cravings. The program boasts that its plan's strengths are portion control, variety and nutritional value. Nutrisystem has 28-day plans designed specifically for men and women. The Silver Plan is appropriate for people over age 65. Diabetic and vegetarian options are also available. The company also offers free online membership and phone consultations.

Nutrisystem Review

Reviews on consumeraffairs.com, a site independent of the Nutrisystem company, do not complain about the results, but rather about the taste of the food and the lack of variety. Customers also said the food was too salty and unappetizing to the eye and nose. Everydayhealth.com states that this plan can help people lose weight in the short term, but people need to adopt their own plans and habits for eating healthy.

About Jenny Craig

The Jenny Craig program includes an option that allows clients to visit Jenny Craig centers for personal support and motivation and to pick up their food each week. The other option is similar to Nutrisystem's in that the food is delivered directly to customers. The company features options for men, older clients, teens and people with Type 2 diabetes. Jenny Craig also offers weekly phone consultations. Jenny Craig incorporates physical activity and mind-body balance into its plan, in addition to portion control and nutritional foods. The company's website claims its plan is designed to result in a 1 percent decrease in body weight per week.

Jenny Craig Review

Everydayhealth.com also has reviewed the Jenny Craig plan. The website reports that the advantages of Jenny Craig include a lot of support, a plan that is based on the recommended U.S. Food Guide Pyramid and the fact that there are no calories to count. However, people also need to become educated about their health and take nutrition into their own hands. Everydayhealth.com also says it can be costly to stay on the program. Finally, the website suggests that customers be wary, because not everyone on the support staff is a nutrition expert.

Costs

Basic meal plans for Nutrisystem cost $250 to $300 monthly. Basic meal plans are geared toward clients who have less than 10 lbs to lose. Nutrisystem's Select plan costs more than $350 a month. An independent reviewing website estimates the Jenny Craig plan will cost you more than $400 per month for food. Clients also must pay a membership fee, depending on their plan.
