As simple as it seems, to bowl in the zone you have to know where the zone is. From that point, it's a matter of applying techniques that get you there. Consistent bowlers develop techniques to do this. It's possible to develop your own techniques by rolling several dozen lines with emphasis on the right things. The goal is an ability to get in the zone 75 percent of the time. This is the mark many champions shoot for when they're determined to elevate their game.
Step 1
Take your position ready to make an approach and focus on the strike zone. Create an imaginary line from the strike zone to your ball. Make your approach, release the ball and follow through with your throwing arm until your thumb is at eye level.
Step 2
Note the relationship between your thumb and where the ball strikes the pins. Take your position again and visualize the line to the strike zone. Roll another ball and make the necessary correction so your thumb finishes in line with the strike zone.
Step 3
Take your position a third time and note where your imaginary line intersects with a mark on the boards. Use this mark as a target and roll another ball with complete focus on hitting that mark. Make adjustments and continue to roll to this mark until your ball hits the strike zone as you intend.
Step 4
Reduce the size of the strike zone. Concentrate on a spot in your strike zone that's 1/4 inch in size. Continue to roll until you to hit this spot without regard for other pins that are standing.
Step 5
Take any importance away from the idea of hitting the strike zone. Believe you can hit a 1/4-inch spot it at will. Roll a ball and close your eyes as you release it toward your mark on the boards.
Step 6
Bowl a complete game with carefree abandonment and without regard for your score. Move the contact point to spots near the end pins and the center of the head pin. Attempt to roll a split on the first ball.
Step 7
Practice with the purpose of adopting a positive mindset. Develop a mental approach to the game based on confidence in your ability to hit a spot at any time you choose. Allow new things into your game.
