You can easily become frustrated if your hair is dead, damaged or dry. Generally, the causes of dead hair are frequent chemical processing from dyes, perms, relaxers and straighteners and poor hair care habits. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, inadequate nutrition, such as lack of iron or B-vitamins, can contribute to the formation of certain hair disorders. Unfortunately, once your hair is dead, there's no way to revive it. However, you can help keep new hair growth healthy and give your hair its best possible appearance while it grows out.
Step 1
Cut off dead parts of your hair, if possible. If all of your hair is dead, you'll have to get frequent trims to remove the dead parts and keep the new hair growth healthy. If you have split ends, you must remove them to prevent them from splitting into your new hair. Ask your stylist to trim just the ends every 6 to 8 weeks instead of getting one big haircut all at once.
Step 2
Moisturize your hair. Keeping both the dead hair and new hair growth as moisturized as possible will help to keep it in manageable condition during the growing out process. Use a deep conditioner such as a hair mask or mud treatment once or twice a week to add nutrients and moisture back to your hair shaft.
Step 3
Wash your hair with shampoo no more than three times per week. If you have dry hair, use a moisturizing or repairing shampoo twice a week. If your hair is oily, it is acceptable to wash more frequently with a gentle cleansing shampoo to remove excess oil buildup. Washing your hair too often with harsh shampoos can dry out your scalp and leave your hair dry, brittle and inflexible.
Step 4
Take a multivitamin containing B-complex, iron and the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, these vitamins may help to address underlying nutritional deficiencies that could lead to hair loss or poor hair condition.
Step 5
Use a natural bristle brush when brushing your hair. Damaged or dead hair is already fragile and delicate, and using metal combs or tugging with plastic bristles can cause more breakage and splits.
Step 6
Massage lavender oil into your scalp in the evening before going to bed. According to the National Institutes of Health Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, lavender oil may help with hair growth and prevent hair loss. Mix a few drops of lavender oil with 1 tbsp. of a carrier oil, like olive oil, and rub it into your scalp gently.
