Doryx is a broad spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It is used to slow the growth of bacteria long enough to allow the body to destroy the invaders. Prophylactic use of Doryx, to prevent contraction of malaria, is also common. The medicine is available in delayed release tablets. The duration of administration depends on the reason for taking the medication. Use Doryx cautiously in individuals with certain medical conditions.
Uses
Common conditions treated with Doryx include fevers such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and typhus fever. Doryx clears up acne caused by bacteria. Bacterial infections like cholera respond well to Doryx. Individuals at risk for malaria exposure take Doryx to prevent contracting the disease. Doryx also treats individuals exposed to the inhaled version of Anthrax.
Availability
Doryx comes in a delayed-release tablet. Dosages are available in 50 milligrams, 100 milligrams and 150 milligrams. The tablets are white and oval shaped. Inside the tablets are small yellow pellets.
Administration
Individuals take the tablet whole with a glass of water. If you are unable to swallow the medication whole, open the capsule and sprinkle the pellets over applesauce. Do not crush or chew the tablets. Take Doryx by mouth twice a day for the duration prescribed by the physician. Avoid taking antacid medications two hours before or after taking Doryx. Do not stop taking Doryx before you complete the prescribed course of therapy. Store the medication at room temperature and away from light.
Side Effects and Complications
Common side effects of Doryx include gastrointestinal upset, such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and difficulty swallowing. Mild diarrhea is also common. An increased chance of sunburn with sun exposure may occur when taking Doryx. Use caution when outside and apply sunscreen. Avoid tanning beds while taking Doryx. If taking an oral contraceptive, use an alternate form of birth control while taking Doryx because the medication may alter the effectiveness of the contraceptive. Report any serious or severe side effects and complications to the physician or seek immediate medical assistance. Serious problems include, but are not limited to, hives, chest pain and swelling in the airway.
Contraindications
Children under the age of 8 should avoid the use of Doryx because permanent discoloration of teeth may occur from using the medication in young children. Do not take Doryx if pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not take Doryx if there is a previously know allergy to tetracycline. Avoid taking Doryx along with certain medications, including penicillin, barbiturates, carbamazepine and phenytoin.
