Home remedies for drug detoxification may be a possible solution for some drug addiction, according to Mayo Clinic staff. Others may need inpatient care. Either way, getting off the unhealthy drug can be a long process. A variety of remedies and supports are available to the person needing to go through “detox.”

Withdrawal Therapy

Stop taking the drug or alcohol. The withdrawal process can involve a gradual lessening or “ramping down” of whatever drug a person has been on. While some substances can be stopped immediately, others may need to be lessened gradually to avoid dangerous side affects. If hallucinations and seizure activity may begin while detoxing, a gradual tapering off of the drug may be needed.

Liquid flush

In order to help cleanse the body of the drug's effects, drink plenty of water and other liquids. Some drinks, including cranberry juice, offer additional help in flushing out the harmful drugs.

Healthy substitutes

Go for a walk. Mild exercise may help during the detox process. Replace the harmful drug with healthy, unprocessed foods and juices.

Hot baths

Soak in a comfortably hot bath to help relieve stress. Be sure to continue to keep hydrated.

After care

Reach out for support. While detoxifying the body is part of the necessary process in recovery, support groups and counseling may be effective in staying drug free. The decision to get “clean” is primary to begin detox, but staying clean may take a community of caring people and an environment free from the temptation of the drug. Check out well-known organizations like Al-Anon to see what might be a good fit.
