Activities or Sports for Youth in Farwell, Michigan

Keeping kids active and busy can be a challenge, especially in small-town America. In Farwell, Mich., located in Clare County in the midsection of the state's Lower Peninsula, there are plenty of sports and activities that will keep kids busy and active. The schools offer sports and traditional extracurricular activities. Groups outside of the schools with connections to area governments and nonprofits also offer sports and activities for youth.

Club Sports

Younger kids can get active through traditional Little League baseball and softball programs for boys and girls. There also is an independent youth wrestling club for elementary and middle school-age kids. Elementary-age kids interested in tackle football can get involved in the youth football program, which is run independently of the school system.There also are dance studios in the area, including one in nearby Clare.

There are at least three golf courses in the area, providing golfing opportunities for kids. Along with traditional golf on 18- and nine-hole courses, there are miniature courses and disc golf as well. Kids younger than age six can golf for free at some of the courses, while kids seven to 14 may receive a discounted rate. Prices and hours vary.

Farming and Gardening

The Farwell area is a rural community, so many kids may spend time outdoors, working with livestock on the family farm or may have horses or other animals on a hobby farm. The MSU Extension, headquartered in Clare, runs several 4-H groups in Farwell. The clubs range from one which strictly deals with horses to other that include beef, sheep and swine to another that has activities for kids ranging from smaller farm pets to flower gardening.

Lumberjack Festival

Active kids can keep moving at the Lumberjack Festival, held each July in Farwell. The youngest kids can take part in a pedal pull and carnival games. The Farwell High School Sports Boosters sponsor a 5K Run and Walk during the event. The event starts at the Little League field. Other activities to keep kids moving include a hamburger relay, teen contests which are done game-show style, ands kids bucket brigade. (See reference 4)

School Sports

Students who are in middle school and high school will find sports and activities in their local schools. Farwell Middle School and Farwell High school offer a wide range sports, including track, softball and baseball, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, football, soccer, and cross country. Golf is available at the high school level. There are also activities such as band and choir at both schools.
