Finding a New Hair Style

Changing your hairstyle is one of the easiest ways to change your look. Changing your hairstyle has an advantage over other types of physical changes because hair does grow. If you are not happy with the new hairstyle, odds are that within a few weeks you will have enough new hair growth to try something different. You can increase your chance of success when finding a new hairstyle by preparing before you cut your hair. Going into the beautician with no ideas and telling her you want a change increases your odds of being unhappy with the results.

Step 1

Decide on your needs. Some factors are non-negotiable. Some people prefer to keep their hair long enough to pull into a ponytail. Others need a cut that requires minimal time for styling. Still other people want a look that presents a particular image--polished or no nonsense. It is important to determine any specific needs or wants before you start looking at new hairstyles. This will help prevent you from falling in love with a look that will not work for you.

Step 2

Determine your hair's texture. There are all types of hair texture. Hairstyling is much simpler if you choose a style that works well with your hair's natural texture. Hair that is normally curly may look better with a longer style that adds some weight. Fine hair may appear fuller if you get a blunt cut.

Step 3

Look at lots of pictures. Once you have a general idea about what length and style you are interested in, look at pictures. Hairstyling magazines are helpful, but do not limit yourself only to those. Hairstyles in those magazines are often high maintenance and a little too artistic for daily life. Look in women's magazines or at some of your favorite television show characters.

Step 4

Approach people with attractive hairstyles. When you see someone with a hairstyle that you love, do not be too shy to approach her. Most people would consider it a compliment if you approached them and asked about their hair. Find out the name and location of the stylist. Even if you decide on a different cut, a good stylist will help you reproduce an eye-catching style.

Step 5

Talk to your stylist. After you have a relatively good idea about how you want your hair to look, talk to your stylist. Whether this is the stylist you always use or you are trying out someone new, the process is the same. Pictures are helpful. Also, explain what your non-negotiable points are, how long or short it should be and how much time you are willing to spend styling it each day. Once you are comfortable that you are both on the same page, it is time to get started.
