Subway is a chain of stores offering submarine-style sandwiches, salads, breakfast and pizza items, side orders and desserts. Customers can choose from a variety of breads, condiments and vegetables to add to their sandwiches. As each sandwich is made by hand according to a customer's wishes, nutrition information varies from sandwich to sandwich. However, Subway does publish standard nutrition information for all menu items.
Subway Menu Classifications
The official Subway nutrition information sheet divides sandwiches into the six categories of 6 inch sandwiches, low fat footlong sandwiches, 6 inch low fat sandwiches with 6 grams of fat or less, 6 inch flatbread sandwiches with 7 grams of fat or less, kids meal sandwiches and 6 inch limited-time or regional subs. Information on 6 inch subs not considered "low fat" can be doubled to get footlong values. Other items on the Subway menu fall under the categories of salads, breakfast and pizza, bread and condiments, and desserts, sides and beverages.
Subway Sandwich Nutritional Information
Subway considers the "typical" sandwich configuration to be a 6 inch sub with 9-grain wheat bread, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, green peppers and cucumbers, with cheese added only for subs in the 6 inch sandwich category. Using these criteria, the sandwich with the most fat is the Subway Tuna at 30 grams, while the Veggie Delight is lightest in both fat grams and calories at 2.5g and 30, respectively. The highest calorie sandwiches are the 580-calorie Meatball Marinara and Big Pastrami subs.
Condiment and Vegetable Nutritional Information
Most vegetables do not significantly change the overall nutritional value of a Subway sandwich. For example, on the nutrition information sheet most vegetables have fewer than 5 calories and a value of 0 for most categories. Condiments, on the other hand, can have as many as 110 calories and 12 grams of fat, in the case of mayonnaise. Standard vegetables offered at Subway are banana peppers, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, jalapeno peppers, pickles and olives. Available condiments include bacon, light and regular mayonnaise, chipotle southwest sauce, red wine vinaigrette, vinegar, sweet onion sauce, olive oil blend, pepperoni, honey mustard sauce, ranch dressing and yellow or brown mustard.
Bread Nutritional Information
In addition to offering wraps, mini wheat bread, mini Italian bread and a light wheat English muffin, Subway has nine standard types of sandwich bread. Subway breads include parmesan oregano, honey oat, Italian herbs & cheese, Italian, or white, 9-grain wheat, flatbread, hearty Italian, monterey cheddar and roasted garlic. For 6 inch sandwiches, the type of bread selected can slightly alter the total calorie counts for a sandwich, as breads range in calories from 200 for the Italian white bread to 260 for the honey oat bread.
Variations
Not all Subway stores offer the same exact menu, and every Subway sandwich is custom-made, so nutrition information may vary slightly from store to store, and from sandwich to sandwich. Global variations may be larger than regional variations. For example, the New Zealand Subway nutrition information sheet lists a roast lamb sandwich not typically available in America, and the calorie count for the New Zealand Subway Tuna is just 383, as opposed to the American version at 530.
