Simvastatin has dual actions in controlling cholesterol. It both reduces low-density lipoprotein, also known as LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, and it increases high-density lipoprotein, also known as HDL, or "good" cholesterol. These two actions can help people who face the prospect of circulatory diseases such as hardening of the arteries. Along with a healthy diet and exercise plan, simvastatin can help extend quality and length of life in those who are in danger of heart disease. The drug does have some side effects which should be taken into account prior to use.
