Golfers in the state of Washington have more than 325 courses from which to select and more than a dozen of those are in the Seattle area. Local residents and visitors can improve their quality of play and enjoyment of the game at one of the city's golf schools. They provide a chance for you to get your family and friends involved in the sport.

Identification

Most of Seattle's golf courses have golf pros who will help you work on your swing and your short game. When you are looking for a golf school, however, there are a few programs in the city from which to choose. The city's parks and recreation department has a golf school operated at its municipal course at Jackson Park. Seattle Golf Instruction is a privately operated golf school, and The First Tee of Greater Seattle is the local chapter of a national youth-oriented golf education program that uses four area golf courses as its home bases.

Types

The golf schools of Seattle offer instructional programs to players of all ages and all ability levels. Seattle Golf Instruction offers one-hour lessons to couples and individuals, but it also gets you going more often in five- or 10-week programs that include work in practice facilities and on-course instruction. Jackson Park's training includes customized plans when you want to get your co-workers out from behind their desks for a little afternoon activity on the golf course.

Facilities

The Seattle Golf Instruction golf school operates mostly at the practice facility on campus at the University of Washington. Jackson Park has a pair of courses on site, a regulation 18-hole track and a par-three course that provides an easier alternative for beginning players and for when you want to work on your short game. Players working with instructors at Jackson Park spend a great deal of time outside on the golf courses, but they also have year-round, all-weather access to the driving ranges at the city's Interbay Golf Center.

The First Tee

The First Tee program operates nationwide to get young people off the couch and out of the house to learn golf. Young players are exposed to golf rules, etiquette and life skills as part of the program, which uses four courses around the city--Jackson Park, Jefferson Park, Riverbend Golf Complex and the par-three course at Crossroads. The First Tee will get you out on the course to develop your skills as you work with trained PGA professionals. It will also give you access to local, regional and national tournament competition if you desire to take your game to that level.

Features

The golf instructors at the Seattle area golf schools provide a free service to help fit you with the best set of clubs. Video technology is also part of the program at Seattle Golf Instruction, where you can see computer simulations that help you improve your swing. You can implement those changes as you play to lower your score and enjoy the game more.
