Take the whole family to the Black Hills to enjoy the advantages of horseback riding and fresh air. When riding horses, you engage your body's core and back muscles. Old and young people of all levels of experience can enjoy riding. The Black Hills offer plenty of space and beautiful surroundings to take advantage of this pastime.

Environment

The Black Hills of South Dakota rise in the western portion of the state and are surrounded by the Great Plains of North America. Oxygen-producing plants and trees from the Rocky Mountains, Great Plains and northern forests contribute to the nourishing air of this region. In fact, South Dakota's Black Hills consist mostly of forests. Find an array of natural wonders, including rare fish, wildlife and plants. Pine, oak, white spruce, birch and hazelnut trees grace the Black Hills area.

Trails

Ride the former railroad line now called the Mickelson trail, which is also open to bicyclists and hikers and spans more than 109 miles. Crow Peak Trail--only 3.5 miles long--leads to a panoramic view where you can enjoy scenery from three states. The Spearfish area in the northwest part of the Black Hills takes you through a lush aspen and pine-covered path to campgrounds, canyons and gulches. Travel the Centennial Trail that stretches 11 miles along the northeastern portion of the Black Hills.

Camps

Choose from a number of different camps in the area if your horseback riding journey will take more than a day. Many camps have facilities for keeping horses overnight, including corrals, such as Elk Haven in Keystone, a family-owned camp since 2005. Find other camps along the way for a longer journey. To guarantee shelter, make reservations, especially during the warm-weather months. Not far from Elk Haven, in the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve, is Willow Creek riding camp. Both Elk Haven and Willow Creek are not far from Mount Rushmore.

Riding Lessons

Experience the beauty of the Black Hills while learning how to ride, or improve your riding skills if you are already an experienced rider. Many of the outfitters, camps and other businesses in the area offer horseback riding lessons. Black Hills Equestrian Center in Spearfish is one such place. In addition to horseback riding lessons, they offer horse training and boarding, kids camps and women's retreats. If traveling near the Webster area, try a horse farm known as Golden Ventures, and learn the horseback riding discipline of your choice.

Guides

As with riding lessons, many businesses in the Black Hills of South Dakota offer guides to horseback riders, as well as hikers, walkers and bikers. Tourists need guides in order to find their way safely through this vast area, with its wildlife, weather changes and winding trails. At Charmingfare Farm, go on a guided trail ride. Horses are gentle and riders of all experience levels are welcome. Try the Triple R Ranch if you are in the Keystone area.
