Texas Creek, CO Campgrounds

Located approximately 70 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Texas Creek is an unincorporated mountain town. Its proximity to San Isabel National Forest, Pike National Forest and the Royal Gorge Bridge makes it a good camping location for visitors to the area. The surrounding mountains and the Arkansas River provide visitors with scenic views, hiking trails and water sports.

Campgrounds

Located along U.S. Route 50 near Texas Creek, the Cotopaxi Arkansas River KOA has pull-through RV sites, camping cabins and tent sites by the Arkansas River. Also on U.S. Route 50 in nearby Coaldale, Bighorn Park has shaded RV sites, bunkhouses and a grassy tenting area. Approximately 10 miles from Texas Creek in nearby Canon City, the Royal View Campground has RV pull-through sites, camping cabins and secluded tent areas.

Amenities

Amenities at the Cotopaxi Arkansas River KOA include water/electric RV sites with 20/30-amp service, tent sites with water spigots, picnic tables, parking and fire pits. Bighorn Park's tenting area has a large fire pit, and access to showers, restrooms and laundry facilities. The Royal View Campground has hot showers, laundry facilities and a clubhouse.

Activities

The Cotopaxi Arkansas River KOA has a variety of activities, including a swimming pool, fishing, playground, game room, miniature golf, hayrides and gold panning. The Royal View Campground has a large, heated swimming pool. Nearby outdoor activities include whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River, horseback riding in the mountains, hiking in nearby national parks and forests, bungee jumping off the Royal Gorge Bridge and mountain biking through the forests.

Hiking Trails

If you enjoy hiking, you'll find many hiking trails close to Texas Creek's campgrounds. Campers can hike along the Arkansas River, or hike over the mountains from Texas Creek to the neighboring towns of Cotopaxi and Coaldale. The Bureau of Land Management allows hikers to use all existing roads and trails in the Texas Creek area (see Resources for map). Hikers should watch out for motorized vehicles while hiking these trails.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Great Sand Dunes National Park sits approximately 30 miles south of Texas Creek. The park has over 150,000 acres of dunes, wetlands, grasslands, forests, lakes and peaks. Some peaks in the park reach 13,000 feet above sea level. The sand has no designated trails, so visitors can explore at their leisure. Forested trails allow visitors to escape the heat of the dunes. Other outdoor activities at Great Sand Dunes National Park include horseback riding, backpacking, sandboarding, skiing and sledding.
