Skiing is an outdoor sport that takes place in cold, snowy, wintry environments. Wearing the proper apparel is not only important for comfort but also for safety. You want to wear clothes in layers. To help keep you dry and comfortable, they should be designed specifically for skiing.
Wicking Layer
The wicking layer is the layer of clothing that will be closest to your skin. This first layer should consist of long thermal underwear, including a long-sleeve thermal shirt and long underpants. Advanced skiers will usually wear more expensive, specially made compression underwear that provides warmth and support for the muscles.
Insulation Layer
The insulation layer is the middle layer of clothing on your upper body. This layer should keep the warmth in and the cold out. This layer may consist of a pullover, a sweater or a turtleneck shirt. Fleece and wool are the recommended materials for this layer because they continue to keep the body dry even when wet.
Outer Layer
The outer layer, also known as the protection layer, should be made of waterproof material and be comfortable and breathable. It is meant to protect you from snow, rain, cold and wind. A specially designed ski jacket and ski pants are recommended. They should fit properly and loosely and have cuffs, pockets and zippers that snap or zipper tightly to keep out the elements.
Head
A ski helmet is recommended for safety, especially for beginners. It will also help to keep your head warm and dry. If you choose not to wear a helmet you should at least consider a wool knit hat that covers your head and ears. Wear goggles to help protect your eyes from snow and ice and to keep your vision clear while skiing. For added warmth, you may want to wear a scarf or wrap around your neck and face.
Extremities
Your extremities are your hands and feet. Wearing gloves that are water repellent and insulated are recommended because they will keep your hands warm and dry. Gloves will also help provide cushion from falls and give you a better grip on your ski poles. Your feet should have thick socks that will keep your feet warm but will also be comfortable. Over your socks, you should wear ski boots that fit properly. Because of the thick socks, your ski boot size will be larger than your normal shoe size.
