Weight Watchers is a weight loss program designed to walk people through the dieting process and train them to follow a healthy lifestyle. According to WeightWatchers.com, the program is a time-tested approach developed from years of scientific studies to help people focus on integrating good eating choices and exercise. The "Week 1: Getting Started" booklet assists new members in starting the program and making the best choices to meet their weight loss goals.

Step 1

Attend your first Weight Watchers meeting and register to be a member to receive the "Week 1: Getting Started" booklet. Attend the new member orientation before or after the regular meeting to walk through the Week 1 materials.

Step 2

Read the "Week 1: Getting Started" booklet on your own to become familiar with the Weight Watcher program and expectations for success.

Step 3

Familiarize yourself with the food guide in the "Getting Started" booklet so you can choose foods low in Points. Read how to calculate Point values with the slide calculator for those foods not listed in the food guide.

Step 4

Plan your first day meal plan using the food list with associated Weight Watcher Points as a reference. Include one or two snacks with their Point value.

Step 5

Add up the Point value for your daily meal plan to make sure you are in the correct daily Point range for your weight. Attempt to plan your daily Points value so you hit the middle of your Points range.

Step 6

Create an exercise plan to gain activity Points with the Weight Watchers program. The Weight Watchers "Week 1: Getting Started" booklet recommends including a minimum of 20 minutes of activity each day. Good options include walking, gardening or playing ball with your children.

Step 7

Refer back to the "Week 1: Getting Started" booklet whenever you are struggling with the program or need a basic refresher to stay motivated.

Tips and Warnings

  • The Weight Watchers program has an online option that allows you to follow their program without attending meetings. The online module is integrated to include the information found in the Getting Started booklet along with other tools. Online members do not receive the packet of information given to members that attend the meetings.
