The Negative Effects of Mega Cleanse

Mega-Cleanse is a multi-day program that some people believe removes toxins from the liver and kidneys, treating a variety of symptoms from fatigue to serious illness. Mega-Cleanse capsules contain spirulina, in addition to a variety of herbs to assist the body with elimination of toxins that are taken 30 minutes before or immediately after a meal. While MayoClinic.com reports there is little evidence to support the efficacy of a cleanse or detox, it is usually not harmful. There are side effects, though, making the cleanse unpleasant at best and possibly toxic at worst. Cleanses can interfere with several bodily functions and should only be done with the permission of your health care provider.

Bowel Problems

The herbs contained in Mega-Cleanse stimulate the liver and kidneys to get rid of toxins that may be stored there. This is done through the bowels, so diarrhea is a common side effect. Constipation can also be a side effect as digestion is interrupted with the herbs. The company said that if you have this side effect you are taking too many capsules and should cut back, detoxing more slowly.

Headaches

Headaches are a common side effect of any cleanse. The manufacturer suggests that the headaches are caused by the release of toxins into the body while the cleansing occurs, but headaches may also be caused by dehydration--especially if diarrhea has been a problem--or an allergic reaction to one of the herbs in the blend.

Drug interactions

If you take any medication check with your physician before taking any herbal supplement, including Mega Cleanse. Some of the herbs and ingredients in Mega Cleanse can interact with your medication causing it to be more or less effective. Because it is suggested that Mega Cleanse be taken every day, make sure to list it on all medical forms to make sure you have no toxic drug interactions in the future.

Weight Loss

Some people attempt cleanses to lose weight, but others are doing it for health reasons alone. Weight loss is a side effect of Mega Cleanse, which contains herbs that suppress the appetite and stabilize blood sugar. Additionally, weight loss can be attributed to diarrhea and herbs contained in the formula to treat water retention.

Allergic Reaction

Some people are allergic to the blend in Mega Cleanse. The most common side effect of an allergic reaction is dry, itchy skin.
