When the sinus cavities become inflamed and swollen, a sinus infection sets in. According to MayoClinic.com, sinus problems are often caused by the common cold, but also may be caused by bacteria, allergies and fungal infections. The sinuses are the hollow cavities near the nose and forehead. Nearly 37 million Americans suffer from sinus conditions each year, reports the Cleveland Clinic. Symptoms of a sinus infection include nasal congestion, mucous drainage in the nose or throat, facial pressure and a cough. MayoClinic.com reports most sinus infections are treated with at home remedies.
Neti Pot
A neti pot cleanses the sinuses and nasal passageways. The pot, similar to a teapot, is filled with warm saline solution. A homemade saline solution is created by mixing about ½ tsp. table salt with a cup of warm water. To use it, the person stands over a sink and leans his head so one nostril is on top. He pours the solution into the nostril and allows it to rinse out the opposite nostril, then repeats the process on the opposite nostril. If a neti pot is unavailable, a small shot glass, teapot or bulb syringe will work.
Hydration
When fighting a sinus infection, an increase in fluids helps drain and dilute mucous secretions. MayoClinic.com suggests drinking water or juice. Warm broths and tea also help with hydration and drainage. Beverages containing caffeine such as coffee, cola and some teas, should be avoided. Alcohol should be avoided when suffering from a sinus infection because it can increase swelling of the nose and sinuses, reports MayoClinic.com.
Warm Compresses and Moisture
Warm, moist washcloths or gauze soaked in hot water or warmed for several seconds in the microwave can soothe the condition. Inhaling moist air also alleviates sinus congestion, reports the Cleveland Clinic. A room vaporizer should be placed near the bed at night. Steaming the sinuses is also beneficial. To steam the sinuses, the person heats water on the stove, places her face about 8 to 12 inches from the water, and covers her head with a towel to create a steam tent. Continuing this for about ten minutes helps relieve sinus congestion.
