Eastern Tao Chinese Herb Tradition

Within Chinese medicine, one of the main practices is the eastern Tao Chinese herb tradition. Chinese herbal medicine is a holistic system that dates back centuries. In this medical practice, several Chinese herbs are blended together in different combinations to produce specific herbal formulas to increase the energy, treat conditions and rebalance harmony within the body.

History

Chinese medicine is considered to be the oldest form of medicinal practice in the world, dating back more than 5,000 years. Dr. Wang, Chinese herbal practitioner, explains that Chinese medicine became a profession during the Han dynasty, more than 2,000 years ago. Herbal remedies have been recorded since that time, some of which are still in use today. Since the 1930s, the popularity of Chinese herbal medicine has gradually increased in the West.

Yin and Yang

Yin and yang are two forces that are said to represent the dualistic nature of energy in all things. According to A World of Chinese Medicine, both forces must be present to allow the existence of the other. If the two become imbalanced, health problems may ensue. Chinese herbal medicine, along with exercise, a healthy diet and acupuncture can help to restore the balance between yin and yang and so harmonize the flow of energy throughout the body.

The Meridians

The Chinese medical model is based on a system of meridians through which the life energy, or qi, flows. According to A World of Chinese Medicine, there are 12 meridians throughout the body; six of them pertain to yin and six to yang. Chinese herbal medicine comes into play when one or more of the meridians become blocked and the qi is no longer able to flow.

Examination and Diagnosis

According to the National Center for Alternative and Complimentary Medicine, in order to make a diagnosis, the traditional Chinese herbal medicine practitioner will ask the patient questions about medical history and lifestyle, and will examine the patient's tongue, meridians and ability to hear and smell.

Traditional Chinese Herbs

The cornucopia of Chinese herbs is plentiful. According to Yang, herbs include Sha Shen for cooling the body and soothing coughs, Duo Huo for healing pain, Huang qi for improving the immune system, Chai hu for revitalizing the qi energy, Feng feng for treating digestive ailments, Dan Shen for improving circulation, Da ji to lower blood pressure and Mu dan pi for relief of menopause symptoms.
