Hair-Loss Vitamins for Men

Vitamins are very important for maintaining a healthy head of hair and preventing the thinning and hair loss that occurs with age. Most hair loss in men is caused by vitamin deficiency, heredity and/or the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT is formed from androgen hormones such as testosterone and DHEA. By supplementing a healthy diet with certain hair-loss vitamins, a man can minimize damage and promote healthy hair follicles.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is very important for preventing hair loss. This fat-soluble vitamin contains retinols and beta carotene. Beta carotene is the natural form of vitamin A found in carrots and other orange- or deep yellow-colored foods. Vitamin A lubricates the hairs roots with sebum oils, promoting natural shine and healthy hair follicles. Natural sources of vitamin A include liver, milk, cheese, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, carrots and apricots. Take 5,000 IU a day of vitamin A. Beta carotene can safely be taken in larger doses, up to 25,000 IU a day. Overdose of vitamin A can lead to liver toxicity and even hair loss.

Vitamin B

The B vitamins are so crucial to hair health that you will not find a "hair" vitamin product without one, or more likely, all of the members of this vitamin family. The B vitamins include B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12. Important B vitamin cofactors include biotin, inositol and folic acid. good B complex, combined with a healthy diet, can supply adequate B vitamins for optimal hair health. Natural sources of B include beans, peas, carrots, cauliflower, soy, brewer's yeast, nuts and eggs. Take up to 5 mg of biotin (B7) a day for extra hair support.

Vitamin C

Everyone knows the health benefits of vitamin C. However, few people understand its importance in maintaining a healthy head of hair. Vitamin C is essential for the strength of hair, skin and nails. The antioxidant properties of vitamin C increase immune function, which can also promote healthy hair. Natural sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, potatoes and green leafy vegetables. Take 1,000 milligrams or more for optimal hair health.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E's contribution to hair health comes from its blood-flow enhancing effects. By stimulating the scalp with oxygen and blood, vitamin E nourishes hair follicles. As an antioxidant, E also promotes immune function. Take 400 to 1,000 IU a day to promote healthy hair and overall well being. Natural sources include avocados, wheat germ oil, almonds, sunflower seeds, peanut butter, broccoli, spinach, mango and kiwis.
