Diet for a Healthy Prostate

Overview

The prostate gland is a very important gland in men that is needed for sexual health and reproduction. It is about the size of a walnut. It produces semen, which carries and protects sperm. It sits below the urinary bladder and can lead to problems with urination if enlarged.

Men can suffer from an enlarged prostate, infection or inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis) and prostate cancer. According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, "It is the most common non-skin cancer in America, affecting one in six men."

Prostate problems can be diagnosed by a doctor with a digital rectal exam and a PSA blood test. According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, PSA is a protein found in men's blood called prostate-specific antigen. High levels of PSA can signify problems. Finally, men can help ward off problems with their prostates by living a healthy lifestyle, which includes exercising and eating right.

Step 1

Understand that fresh fruits and vegetables are necessary for a healthy body and a healthy prostate gland. "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" recommends eating broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, orange vegetables, such as pumpkin, carrots, and yams; berries, apples, grapes and plums. The book also recommends foods that are high in zinc, including pumpkin seeds, mushrooms, seafood and whole grains. Zinc helps to nourish the prostate gland and aid in overall immunity.

Step 2

Know that legumes, such as red beans, lentils and chick peas, should also be consumed.

Step 3

Consume fish as a good source of lean protein.

Step 4

Avoid processed and refined foods, including all foods made with white flour and sugar. "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" recommends limiting the intake of dairy products, but does say low-fat yogurt and kefir are good choices to eat. Red meat should be eliminated from the diet, as well as alcohol and caffeinated beverages.

Step 5

Keep in mind that olive oil and sesame oil are good choices for healthy fats.

  • Whole foods should be consumed when possible, and organic foods are the best choice.
