The basic ball-handling skills of rugby are passing, catching and kicking. The best way to train your ball-handling ability is to drill the movements that you'll be required to perform in competition. Some drills may be possible on your own, but passing and catching require at least one partner. Since the ball can't be passed forward, it's important that some of your drills take place with movement so that you can get used to passing and catching on the run.
Step 1
Warm up by tossing the ball back and forth with a partner.
Step 2
Dropkick the ball back and forth with a partner to warm up your legs.
Step 3
Execute a basic passing drill by running down the field with a partner. Pass the ball back to him, then allow him to get ahead. Receive a pass from him, then run ahead and pass it back. Repeat this sequence all the way down the field.
Step 4
Run the same drill with a team variation. Divide into three groups of four people and form horizontal lines opposite each other. One side will have two lines of four, the other will have one line. The first line of four on the larger side runs forward and passes the ball down the line. The last man hands it off to the next line of four, who repeats the process. The third line takes a turn, and hands off to the first line to start again.
Step 5
Work on dropkicks and fielding by running upfield. Dropkick the ball in a backward diagonal direction. Run to it and gather it. Head upfield again and repeat. Field the ball a second time then run for the try line.
Step 6
Position yourself in field-goal range. Receive a pass from a partner, then attempt a dropkick field goal. This will improve your ability to transition from a catch to an accurate kick.
Tips and Warnings
- Always pass with the ball held away from your chest. Use your far arm to propel it.
