Yeast infections are the result of an imbalance of vaginal bacteria and yeast. Candida, a fungus, begins to grow, resulting in such symptoms as itching, burning and excessive discharge. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends over-the-counter treatment but warns women that they should first seek confirmation of diagnosis from their gynecologist. Some women may wish to pursue alternative treatment for yeast infection but should discuss options with their doctors or alternative health care providers first.

Garlic

Garlic possesses antiviral and antibacterial properties and is recommended by midwives for yeast infection treatment. A woman can place one peeled, whole clove of garlic in her vagina nightly until symptoms improve, according to Midwifery Today. If the infection is in later stages, women may want to cut the garlic in half and place both halves in the vagina. This increases the surface area of skin touched by the garlic.

Probiotics

Probiotics, commonly called acidophilus or bifidus supplements, increase the amount of good bacteria in the gut, making it difficult for candida to thrive. Probiotics exist naturally in fermented foods such as yogurt, kimchi and kefir, but alternative health magazine Natural Solutions recommends a supplement in order to get the recommended one billion active cultures. Probiotics are available in pill or powder form and must be kept refrigerated to maintain their integrity.

Alkaline Diet

Because yeast feeds on acidic food and drink such as sugar, white flour, dairy, meat, soda, caffeine and alcohol, women should eliminate them from their diets while suffering a yeast infection. An alkaline diet rebalances the system and prevents yeast growth. Women can squeeze lime or lemon juice in their water to alkalinize it. They can also eat a diet rich in seeds, nuts, vegetables and legumes. Think whole, not processed, foods. Mothering magazine also recommends oregano extract and coconut oil.

Green Home

Fragrances, chemicals and additives present in most commercial brands of housecleaner and cosmetics upset the body's pH and make a woman vulnerable to yeast infection. Women can purchase "green" brands or make products themselves with natural ingredients such as baking soda, vinegar or borax.
