Carbohydrates are one of the main sources of energy to the body, as they are turned into glucose used by your brain and muscles. Carbohydrates are either simple, such as sugar, or complex, such as grains. Whether you are a marathon runner trying to eat many carbohydrates or a person on a diet trying to avoid them, it is important to understand which foods are high in carbohydrates.

Breads

Many types of breads are high in carbohydrates, including white bread, banana bread, rye bread, Italian bread, raisin bread, wheat bread and so on. Whole grain breads have complex carbs, whereas white breads are made with white flour and have simple carbs. Both types have about 50 carbs per 100g serving, but complex carbs are healthier for the body as they metabolize slower inside the body.

Bagels and Muffins

Breakfast can be a great meal get your carbohydrates, providing you with enough energy to make it through the morning. Wheat muffins have more carbohydrates than corn muffins, and cinnamon raisin and egg bagels also have upwards of 50 carbs per 100g serving.

Chocolate

Although many of the carbohydrates in chocolate are simple carbohydrates, sweets made from chocolate--such as chocolate cake, chocolate candy and cocoa--are very high in carbohydrates.
