Hiking tours at national parks are not what they used to be. Catering to the different needs of young and old, and a whole range of athletic abilities, these days you will probably be happily surprised to discover a special tour to suit your or your family's needs. Many hiking itineraries are even based around a comfortable lodge or inn stay as a base.
Camaraderie, information on local plants and animals as well as safety concerns may factor into your choice. Needless to say, tours at a park as popular as Yosemite cover a variety of destinations from the gentlest meadow to the multi-day or -week wilderness excursion.
Family-Friendly Hikes
Friendly guides will lead your family through shorter and easier terrain while members have the chance to hear about the natural history of the park. A specialized tour may include the park's little-known facts, special secrets or even ghost stories. Little ones will have an opportunity to get their questions about local plants and animals answered too. The youngest children may often participate in these hikes for free; ask your touring company about their policy.
Easy, Gentle Tours
Some visitors may prefer a gentler hike of four to five miles, with little rise in elevation. These trails provide scenic points in which to take photos or enjoy an old-fashioned picnic. Tours can be customized depending on individual needs. Mature travelers are always welcome.
Landmark Tours
Be inspired by geologic wonders such as El Capitan and Half Dome, along with other Yosemite classics such as the Panorama Trail. Some tours specialize in the famed waterfalls including Nevada Falls, Vernal Falls, Yosemite Falls and Illuluette Falls. These can be explored during day hikes or backpacking trips.
Winter Hiking Tours
Experience a winter trek on snowshoes through Yosemite's quiet winter months. These hikes often last a half-day and include rental of snowshoes and poles. Expect to travel an average of three or four miles on an introductory tour through a very different type of spectacular scenery, with knowledgeable guides. Longer hikes may extend as long as six to eight miles, and six to eight hours. Other sport hikes, in milder seasons, may include kayaking, rafting, cycling or even yoga.
Backcountry Hikes
Those seeking wilderness permits to travel out of the park's regular visitor area for a multi-day backpacking trip can do so with the reassurance of a guided tour. Companies often adjust their rates to the length of trip you desire. As always, availability of these guided treks hinges on weather conditions. Don't hesitate to request a particular type of trip--terrain or elevation gain--or destination, if you have these in mind.
