How to Blow Dry Your Hair Straight

Hairdressers use their blow dryers with great finesse and expertise, sometimes making it look easy to style and straighten wavy hair with the little machines. At home, amateurs sometimes have a harder time learning how to expertly maneuver the blow dryer. With the proper hair products and the right brushes, however, coupled with a few expert tips, hairstylists at Celebrity Hairdresser's Tips report that you can learn how to blow-dry your hair straight.

Step 1

Detangle your hair with conditioner and let it air dry until it's about 80 percent dry, report professional stylists at Virtual Hair Care. Blow drying hair straight is a tedious process and your arms will tire before you finish if you begin drying when your hair is dripping wet.

Step 2

Find hair products that are suited to your hair type. If you have thin or medium hair, use a light mousse or gel. Wax often works best with thick wavy hair. If your hair is prone to split ends and breakage, make sure the styling product has heat protector in it.

Step 3

Hold a paddle hairbrush in one hand and the dryer in the other. Grab a strand about 2- to 4-inches wide with the brush and hold it out straight while you blow air on it, careful to maintain the tension. Use a clip to hold the rest of the hair up out of the way so that you won't blow hot air on it before you have a chance to straighten it.

Step 4

Direct the air from the dryer down the shafts of the hair from the roots to the ends. Long arms help with this task, which is why another person, such as a hairdresser, can get a better angle on your hair. Shorter hair is easier to hold out while running the air down it.

Step 5

Spritz water on the rest of your head as you dry each strand. While you don't want hair dripping wet, professional stylists say hair should be evenly damp as you work through the drying process.

Step 6

Alternate between hot and cold hair as you dry each strand. Hot air opens the hair strands to allow you to straighten it, while cool air closes it shut. Finish off the drying process with a run of cool air.

Tips and Warnings

  • Sit down while you work the dryer because the arms can get tired holding the dryer high above the head. Blow-drying hair perfectly straight takes time, so plan ahead so that you don't hurry through the process and end up with frizzy ends.
