Dietitians and nutritionists often specialize in practice areas, such as weight management, eating disorders, disease management and sports performance. The American Dietetic Association is an organization of food and nutrition professionals that certifies and credentials individuals in different practice areas. Knowing the various types of nutrition professionals will help you narrow down your search for the right expert to help you in your quest to be the best athlete you can be.
Step 1
Visit the website of the American Dietetic Association and click on the "Find a Registered Dietitian" link. Type in your ZIP code, choose your state and click on the "Sports Nutrition" button. Read the list of dietitians returned and look for ones with the background, education and training that most appeal to you.
Step 2
Visit the websites of the dietitians you are considering hiring to learn more about their practice and experience. Call the dietitians with whom you are interested in working. Ask each one about her educational background, certifications and sports nutrition experience. A number of colleges and universities offer degrees in sports nutrition. Ask if she is a member of the ADA's Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition practice group. SCAN is an interest group for ADA members with expertise in sports nutrition, according to the ADA website. The ADA created the Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics designation for board-certified dietitians who meet more extensive experience requirements, according dietitian Page Love, one of the first to receive CSSD certification in the U.S.
Step 3
Perform an Internet search using the phrase "sports nutrition" and your ZIP code or town name to see what results you receive. Visit their websites for more information about their services.
