Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder affects both children and adults, and is treated with therapy in combination with medications, reports the National Institute of Mental Health. Adderall is a widely prescribed brand-name prescription medicine available in both immediate- and controlled-release forms. However, Adderall isn't the only medicine out there for ADHD. Many alternative medicines are available that are worth exploring with your doctor when considering a medication for ADHD.
Generic Formulations
A primary alternative to Adderall is its generic equivalent--tablets which contain the same active ingredients, dextroamphetamine and amphetamine. Often labeled at the pharmacy as "Amphetamine/S Combo" or "Ampheta S/Combo," generic Adderall is available in strengths ranging from 5 to 30 mg. The main advantage of using a generic alternative to Adderall is the cost. For instance, according to Consumer Reports Health, the monthly cost of 20 mg of generic mixed-amphetamine Adderall equivalent drugs ranges from $28 to $57, while the same dosage of the brand name medicine can cost from $130 to $260.
Methylphenidate
Certain medications work differently depending on the individual with ADHD, so physicians may try another ADHD medication as an alternative to Adderall. Methylphenidate is a commonly-prescribed drug which, like Adderall, is a central nervous system stimulant. The medication is sold as an instant-release tablet under brand names such as Ritalin and Methylin as well as in generic formulations. It is also available as a controlled-release capsule under the brand name Concerta, and as a transdermal skin patch under the name Daytrana.
Other Stimulant Alternatives
In addition to methylphenidate, there exist other medications of the stimulant-class which can be viable alternatives to Adderall to discuss with your doctor. Dextroamphetamine, non-mixed, is one of these--and is available in instant release forms as well as controlled-release pills. Lisdexamfetamine dimesylate, or Vyvanse, is another controlled-release medication which converts to dextroamphetamine only when it is processed in the digestive system--a novel method for reducing the potential for abuse, common to amphetamines, by insufflating or "snorting" crushed pills. Desmethylphenidate, or Focalin, a more potent version of methylphenidate, and methamphetamine hydrochloride, or Desoxyn, are two less-commonly prescribed Adderall alternatives on the market.
Non-Stimulant Alternatives
Atomoxetine, or Strattera, is a non-stimulant, selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that can function as an alternative to Adderall. According to the MayoClinic.com, this medication may help symptoms of ADHD as well as reduce anxiety. Certain drugs for high blood pressure are prescribed as Adderall alternatives; these include clonidine and guanfacine, and may help with ADHD symptoms such as aggression or insomnia caused by other medications, the MayoClinic.com reports.
