Slow hair growth and hair loss result from several factors. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, your daily grooming habits play a key role in hair loss. Chemicals, scratching and poor styling techniques contribute to hair breakage and also damage your scalp, where hair follicles reside. In some cases, illness or poor nutrition can also contribute to your "bad hair days." Try these tips for healthy hair growth.

Gentle Grooming

Hair is very delicate, so rough grooming and styling can easily damage it. Straight hair should be combed and brushed when it's dry, as moisture increases its elasticity, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Curly or kinky hair is easier to detangle when it's damp. Use a wide-tooth comb and work from the ends of the hair to the root.

For daily grooming, don't over-brush your hair or use loads of heavy products. Eventually, products build up on your scalp and block hair follicles, which stunt growth, explains Jena Renee Williams, author of "Kinki Kreations."

Heat Protection

Styling tools such as blow dryers, flat or curling irons and hot combs can expose your hair to too much heat. Excessive heat dries out your hair and damages the outer cuticle, which increases breakage, states the American Academy of Dermatology. Avoid using these tools, or use them only at low or medium heat. Another option is to apply a heat-protecting product on your hair before using heat-styling tools.

Proper Conditioning

Conditioners help restore moisture stripped from your hair when you shampoo it. Deep conditioners also penetrate hair cuticle and help to strengthen it and improve elasticity, states A. Dickey, author of "Hair Rules." However, it's important to apply conditioner evenly to your hair, making sure that the ends are well-treated.

Good Nutrition

Hair is made of protein, so make sure you're getting enough of this nutrient in your diet from sources such as lean meat, fish, eggs, milk and dairy products and soy. Iron is another nutrient you need for healthy hair growth. Red meat, eggs, spinach, dried beans and iron-fortified foods are good sources. Take iron from plant sources with vitamin-C foods for better absorption. Also, MayoClinic.com points out that fad or crash diets can lead to nutrient deficiencies, so avoid these unhealthy eating plans.
