How to Unlock the Power of the Mind

Whenever we undertake a challenging task, there are two components at work--the outer world, which includes the hands-on, physical actions you take, and the inner world, which includes the power of the mind and spirit. Most people focus on the outer world, since it is what they have been taught their whole lives, but by tapping into the power of the mind, you can achieve much more.

Step 1

Begin meditation by lying on your bed or the floor, or sitting straight up in a chair, with your feet firmly planted on the ground and closing your eyes. Put on your headphones to shut out any distractions and listen to meditative music on your MP3 player, stereo or computer. This music can be nature sounds, such as waves crashing against the shore, a trickling stream, or birds chirping; or it can be soft music that inspires you.

You can also choose to use a brainwave entrainment audio, which uses "beats" to synchronize your brain. Some people meditate without any audio enhancement, but it helps you to stop your mind from wandering. As you meditate, breathe slowly and focus on your breath. Allow pictures and messages to come to you, but do not judge them in the moment.

Step 2

Once you have been meditating for up to 30 minutes without interference, start to think about what you want to achieve. Ask your subconscious mind for guidance, and wait for messages or signs to come to you. Do not let your current beliefs or habits get in the way; your subconscious mind can accomplish more than you may think it can.

Step 3

Close your eyes--while either sitting or lying down--and visualize yourself achieving what you want. If it is scoring the winning touchdown in a football game, see yourself doing that. See the crowd cheering, and your teammates lifting you onto their shoulders and shouting your name. If it is delivering a powerful presentation at work, see yourself doing that. Observe every detail and focus on the emotions you feel when you achieve that goal.

Step 4

Affirm what you want to be true, as if it is true now. For instance, if you want to make a sales presentation that brings in 10 sales, say to yourself, "My sales presentations always bring in at least 10 sales." The challenge with affirmations is that when you say something like that, a little voice in the back of your mind might come back with, "No, they don't!" To prevent that from happening, do not just say the words; tap into the emotions you were feeling while visualizing so you can experience what it would feel like if that statement were true. Say your affirmations with feeling every time you say them, which can be several times a day. Write them down on pieces of paper or sticky notes, and put them where you will see them often, being sure to bring up those emotions of achievement every time you do.

Step 5

Plan what steps you need to take to achieve what you want, based on the messages you have received while meditating or any ideas that have popped into your mind while visualizing and affirming. Use your day planner and mark down dates that you want to--or need to--achieve certain steps that move you toward the end goal. If you find too much planning causes you stress, then only plan what feels right to you; if you love planning out every minute detail, then go for it. However, be adaptable and willing to change the plan if required.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you still believe you cannot do something, ask yourself why not? Limiting beliefs can hold you back from doing amazing things, and beliefs do not hold water if there is no proof that they are true. If you believe that you need an education to succeed in business, ask yourself if you know or have heard of anyone who has succeeded in business without an education. If the answer is yes, then your belief is not true.
  • Brainwave entrainment is not recommended for people prone to seizures or pregnant women.
