Irritable Bowel Syndrome Information

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition that can cause a multitude of gastrointestinal problems for 12 weeks or more. Diarrhea, constipation, frequent bowel movements and stomach cramps are some of the symptoms of this condition. Approximately one in five Americans suffers from this condition; however, many of these sufferers have not been formally diagnosed, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Risk Factors

Irritable bowel syndrome affects more females than males and in approximately 50 percent of IBS sufferers, symptoms begin before age 35. Additionally, patients with a family history of IBS are more likely to suffer from the condition.

Causes

There is no known cause of IBS; however, some trigger factors include dietary habits, gastrointestinal illnesses, stress and hormones.

Diagnostic Method

Keeping a detailed journal of your diet, exercise, stress levels and symptoms will help your physician to make an accurate diagnosis. Additionally, your doctor may order tests such as blood tests, lactose intolerance tests, colonoscopy, CT scan or flexible sigmoidoscopy.

Complications

Dehydration, malnourishment and hemorrhoids are all possible complications of IBS. These can be combated by eating a well-balanced diet and drinking water and fluids throughout the day.

Treatments

The treatments for IBS include dietary changes according to your trigger foods, antibiotics to combat intestinal infections and anti-diarrheal medications. Some sufferers may need other medications depending upon the symptoms and severity of the IBS.
