Schools in Atlanta That Offer Classes in Nutrition

A nutritionist plans food and nutrition programs. Through these meal plans, nutritionists can prevent or treat illnesses or help an athlete maintain weight or build muscle mass. In the city of Atlanta, there are several schools that offer classes in nutrition.

Georgia State University

At Georgia State University, students can received a nutrition degree through the College of Health and Human Sciences. The nutrition degree is part of the Didactic Program in Dietetics. This is a Bachelor of Science program and is through the college's Division of Nutrition. This program focuses on obesity and related disorders. The Commission on Accreditation accredits the program for Dietetics Education. After completing the program, graduates are eligible to apply for a dietetic internship.

Emory University

The Atlanta private research school Emory has a graduate division of nutrition and health sciences. According to its website, this program is ranked number four in the United States in research productivity. The core focus of this department is clinical nutrition, public nutrition and metabolomics. The Nutrition and Health Sciences Program only awards PhD degrees. At the end of the program, students must defend a dissertation. The program typically takes 5.8 years to complete.

Mercer University

At Mercer University, which has a campus in Atlanta, students can take nutrition classes through the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. This program offers advanced Doctor of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science degrees. Classes include Medical Nutrition, where students learn about the nutritional medical disorders, nutritional supplements and patient nutritional assessments. In Nutritional Support, students gain knowledge and practical experience in basic nutritional principles. Finally, in Foundational Musculoskeletal Sciences class, students learn about the importance and effects of nutrition upon the aging human body.

Jobs

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, more than half the jobs that require nutritionists are held in hospitals, physician offices, nursing facilities and outpatient care centers. During the 2008 to 2018 time frame, employment of dietitians is projected to grow nine percent. As of 2008, the median income for a nutritionist was $50,590.

Training

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, to practice as a nutritionist, most states require at least a bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition, dietetics or a related field to become a certified nutritionist. Across the United States, there are 279 bachelor's degree programs and 18 master's degree programs accredited for Dietetics Education.
