Jersey City affords you the chance to participate in health programs at an upscale fitness center, community fitness club or a national chain facility. Some people may opt to travel to New York City, a short train ride away, because it has more fitness classes than you can imagine. If you plan to stay in the neighborhood, however, you can still have the opportunity of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Full Service Facilities
Bally Total Fitness operates every day of the week. While you exercise, let your children enjoy games and activities at the supervised Kids Club. When you need an exercise break, visit the on-site juice bar for a protein bar or smoothie. Bally offers classes such as cardio fusion, kwando and boot camp. Another full-service fitness facility is Synergy Fitness on Newark Avenue. Some classes include self-defense, a 30-minute abdominal and calisthenics boot camp and a 30-minute lower-body conditioning course.
Just for Women
Jersey City is home to one of the 10 Lucille Roberts Women's Gyms in New Jersey. You can find the Jersey City Lucille Roberts fitness center in the Central Avenue shopping area. You not only have access to plenty of exercise equipment but also to a variety of weight-loss programs and group exercise classes, including a "mega mix workout" that combines strength training, kickboxing, jump rope and stepping into one class.
Spa Fitness Club
Club H Fitness combines spa offerings with the latest exercise equipment. If you are into a New-Age fitness program, the club offers various forms of yoga and Pilates courses. Other group exercise classes available include belly dancing, cardio kickboxing and hip-hop dance. Before you leave, you can arrange for an on-site spa treatment, such as a 60-minute salt scrub body massage, a 90-minute deep-tissue massage or a 30-minute hydro glycolic facial.
Martial Arts
Martial arts help build self-esteem, tone muscles and teach coordination and discipline. Whether Tae Kwon Do, Ho Shin Sul, Hap Ki Do, Kum Do or mixed martial arts, Jersey City has a place where you can learn and practice. Jang Star Tae Kwon Do School offers classes for pre-school children to adults. During the summer, the facility hosts various martial arts summer camps. D.K. Park Tae Kwon Do has served the Jersey City community since 1970. The head coach for the 1992 Olympic team runs the program. Classes available include a pee-wee course, competitor classes, white belt classes and adult classes at all levels.
Kickboxing
Kickboxing works your entire body, tones your muscles and helps build self-confidence. You can learn kickboxing at the Jersey City Kickboxing and Martial Arts Club. The club boasts you can "burn 825 calories an hour" in a kickboxing class. Ages 14 years and up may register in the Muay Thai Kickboxing class, where you will learn clinch drill, conditioning and grappling while standing. If you want to burn fat, the cardio kickboxing class helps you lose a few extra pounds.
