For many fishermen, bait-caster reels are preferred to spinning reels because they are more durable against larger fish and have a more efficient drag mechanism. If the line of the reel is put on incorrectly, it can make casting difficult and rob you of distance. Incorrect spooling of the reel can also lead to tangles in the line, which can quickly ruin a day on your favorite lake or river.
Step 1
Pull a cord of new fishing line from its spool that is at least as long as your bait-caster rod. Thread the line through the eyes of the rod and pull it down to meet the bait-casting reel.
Step 2
Pass the line through the eye of the level winder inside of the reel. The level winder is the ring of metal inside of the bait-casting reel that moves from right to left and back again as you crank the handle. It ensures the line is threaded evenly on the spool.
Step 3
Bring the line over the top of the spool inside of the reel, then pass it under so it is pointing back at the tip of the rod. Thread the line back inside of the reel and over the top of the spool so it is now forming a loop around the spool.
Step 4
Encircle the line coming down the rod three times with the open end of the line. Pass the open end of the line through the loops you created and slowly tighten them to form a noose.
Step 5
Slide the noose down the line so it butts up against the spool of the reel. Tighten the knot by pulling on both ends of the line, then clip the open end of the line off of the knot using scissors or nail clippers.
Step 6
Sit with the bait-casting reel in your lap. Hold the line coming down the rod with one hand and pull on it slightly away from the reel. The line must be kept taut as it is spooled onto the reel or it may become tangled later when you are casting.
Step 7
Turn the crank of the bait-caster reel with your free hand. Spool the line onto the reel until roughly 1/8 inch of space is left on the spool. Cut off the line above the eye at the tip of the rod when you are finished.
