Migraines can be caused by a number of things, including fatigue, stress and caffeine. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, even bright lights and loud noises can trigger a migraine. If you know what gives you a migraine, it might pay to take certain herbs as soon as you notice the pain starting to build on your temples or forehead. Always talk to your doctor before taking any herbs. Many have not been sufficiently tested and studied.

Step 1

Try feverfew. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends taking feverfew up to four times a day to treat a migraine. Start with 100mg. If it doesn't work, increase the dosage to 300mg.

Step 2

Mix 600mg of ginger powder in a glass of water. Ginger powder is available at health food stores and herbal shops. You can make a tea or mix it with cool water. Natural health site Holistic Online recommends drinking the mix every few hours or until the migraine disappears.

Step 3

Try damiana or sarsaparilla. Both herbs are available in capsule form or as a tea. Take as directed on the label. These herbs are best for migraines caused by fatigue or weakness.

Step 4

Mix rosemary essential oil with vegetable oil at a ratio of 1 to 10. Rub it on your temples and forehead. You can also buy dried rosemary and use it to make a tea. Holistic Online recommends drinking 2 oz. of tea three times a day.

Step 5

Search for butterbur. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, this herb can be used to ease the intensity of a migraine and shorten its duration. Consult a doctor before taking this herb, because it can damage the liver. However, the standard maximum dose is 75mg twice a day.
