Fishing from canoe in Palmer, Alaska can be a great adventure. Whether you are there to do some serious sport fishing or just to enjoy the serenity of the Alaskan waters, this is a great activity for the whole family.

Lakes

Several lakes in the Palmer, Alaska area allow both canoeing and fishing. Finger Lake State Recreation Area and Kepler-Bradley State Recreation Area contain four lakes between them that are suitable for fishing from canoe. Several other lakes in the area, such as Matanuska Lake and Summit Lake State Recreation Site, allow canoeing but do not allow fishing. Because fishing restrictions can vary from year to year in Alaska, it is important to double check before heading out.

Canoes

If you do not have your own, canoes and kayaks can be rented from several places in and around Palmer. Canoes can vary by size, weight, and suitability for different activities, so ask for recommendations when renting.

License Requirements

An Alaska sport fishing license is required for all nonresidents 16 and older, and most residents from 16 to 59. Additional stamps may be required depending on the type of fishing you will be doing. Licenses and stamps can be purchased on line or from most sporting goods stores in Alaska.

Fishing Restrictions

Most lakes have limits on the number of fish of each species that may be caught each year. It is important to know this information, as violations of "bag limits" can carry hefty fines. Double check how many fish are allowed to be caught from each lake before heading out.

Considerations

Alaska is famed for its remoteness and Palmer, Alaska, is a very small town. Should you find yourself in danger, help may be a long way away. Cell phones are not always reliable and some lakes are less accessible than others. Take every safety precaution possible to ensure that your fishing trip is both fun and safe.
