Activities for Senior Singles in the Akron, Ohio, Area

Akron, Ohio, offers single seniors many options to make friends, enjoy group activities of many kinds and travel. Weather you enjoy playing bridge, making crafts, dancing, traveling or RV travel there is something for you.

Community Centers Offer Single Seniors Activities and Friendships

If you are a single senior citizen in Akron or the surrounding area chances are there is a community center close to your home. There are 12 city-run centers that offer many activities in a safe environment. There are clubs, trips, games and cards, dancing, exercise classes, speakers, crafts and travel to name a few activities. No matter what your interests are you will find something to do at one or more of the centers and being a part of the centers offers a good opportunity to make new friends. The City of Akron Recreation Bureau runs the centers and they have a program schedule available. There are also opportunities at senior and community centers in the outlying communities around Akron. You can go to activities as many times and at as many places as you would like. Some of the senior centers offer a meal five days a week allowing friends to eat together.

Be an Olympian

Akron and the surrounding areas offer older adults a chance to participate in organized sports through the Senior Olympics Program that is run through the University of Akron and local parks departments. It allows for single seniors to meet others who share common interests, to get exercise and be active. There is also an opportunity to participate on a state and national level. There are many choices when it comes to events. Whether you are a bowler or a javelin thrower you can do your thing. Registration is in March for events that include, archery, bowling, cycling, golf, horseshoes, racquetball, shuffleboard, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track and field, race walk, five- and 10-K road race, basketball, volleyball and DanceSport.

Senior Clubs

The community centers in Akron also offer senior clubs in the city and surrounding areas. These clubs are separate from visiting the center for daily cards or programs. The clubs have their own travel agendas and other planned activities. Whether you become a part of the Golden Keenagers, a Prime Timer or a Joyful Senior you can find the club that is close to you and that offers the things you like to do. Check with your local senior or community center for information on local clubs.

Pack 'Em Up and Head 'Em Out,

This singles RV club is on the move. The Ohio chapter of the national group, Loaners on Wheels or LoW, is the Cardinal LoW's. This group is getting out and traveling. The only requirements for membership is, you need to be legally single and when attending an official LoW function you are not sharing a rig with a member of the opposite sex. If you enjoy camping and travel and do not want to go alone then this group of mingling singles has a place for you. They pride themselves on their warm campfires, great food, fun games and fellowship and guarantee you will feel welcomed. They do state, however, if you are looking for a match-making group then this is not the place for you. They are just out to have a good time, a good trip and not be alone. Camp outs are on the third weekend of the month from April through October and there are also scheduled special events including five-day rallies, camp outs and some of the groups join in on the all-winter rallies in warmer climates. Benefits

Many of the Akron area churches also offer senior activities, clubs and travel. There are many benefits to joining a club, visiting a community or senior center or taking to the road with an RV group. If you are a single senior get up and get social you will feel better and enjoy life. Akron offers you many opportunities to do so.
